From the Inside Flap
Does money represent luxury, security, and peace of mind, or stress, inequality, barriers, and greed? LOADED is written for anyone who struggles with their complex relationship with the so-called "root of all evil."
Rather than offering traditional financial advice, Sarah Newcomb (a Morningstar behavioral economist) digs deeper and approaches money management from a fresh angle. LOADED explains how our experiences with money have a psychological basis and can often run counter to our core values.
Our personal history has a profound influence on how we handle or mishandle money. In reality, however, money is a simple tool, a neutral resource that is full of possibilities. It can be used for good or for ill, and how we use it is entirely a matter of personal choice. Our relationship with money is almost never about the numbers. It is about the stories we tell ourselves because of those numbers. We all come to believe certain stories based on our upbringing and our experiences with money. This is where our relationship with money is rooted, and this is where sound money management begins.
Based on years of research and filled with illustrative stories, LOADED offers an important guide for identifying the harmful core beliefs about money and what can be done to challenge and overcome those negative beliefs. Once a clear understanding of an individual's beliefs about money is established, the human-centered approach to budgeting and money management can be put into action. This budgeting structure incorporates several principles from psychology that are missing or misaligned in traditional budgeting methods.
The fresh approach outlined in this book is a money management method rooted in psychology that offers a way of changing one's financial life by creating a plan for money that is both deeply satisfying and also sustainable over the long term. The author also includes a wealth of worksheets and personal money psychology assessments to aid in the LOADED process.
LOADED offers an approach for discovering and understanding your relationship with money that will lead to more peace and satisfaction in your financial life.

Get at the heart of your spending - and start saving
By KB Brown
This book made changes in my life that I was not expecting. I’m pretty self-aware to begin with, and knew that my relationship with money was not as healthy as it could be. I set out to read this book with the hopes that I would finally be able to start saving money without feeling like I was pinching pennies. I ended up constructing a financial life I’m actually excited about.
Newcomb is able to challenge conventional money strategies by reframing the way we approach it. For example, I’ve always thought of the budget as two column: income and expenses. But the Loaded budget helped me see myself and skills as assets. I realized I have a lot more opportunities to make money than my paycheck. By seeing myself as a resource, I am able to start taking control of how I earn money rather than feeling like my paycheck is something that I’ll earn if I’m lucky.
The chapter on money psychology is really interesting, and she asks insightful questions. Her thoughts on privilege are particularly astute and useful beyond the world of money. The section on psychological distance really resonated with me. As someone is generally impatient and focused on the moment, I found her research and advice on how to get past impulsiveness immediately useful.
Another thing I love is how Newcomb describes everything as a need. We don’t have needs and wants, she says: we have needs and strategies. While I’ve instinctively recognized this in my own budget already, she lays out a very good case about how the things we want actually meet a need. For example, the trip to the coffee shop may actually be satisfying a social need. The strategy may change – say, order something cheaper, or head to the park instead – but knowing why you’re doing something will help so much with sticking to the budget.
This book will challenge you to be honest about your beliefs and needs and promises that if you do, you’ll get on track to a healthy relationship with money. If you’re already familiar with self-growth, you’ll find Newcomb’s approach really helpful to getting your financial life together. Even if it’s something that you’ve never tried, I think you’ll find it’s a refreshing way to think about personal finance.

EVERYONE needs to read this book!!!
By DEK
I LOVED this book! After teaching financial literacy in high school and in college for many years, I find Sarah's take on the psychology of money refreshing and very true to LIFE! It provides the missing piece in the relevancy of financial literacy. Herwriting flows neatly by introducing a new topic in the last sentence of the previous topic. LOADED is easy to read and understand, and her stories used to support her concepts are very relatable and help to maintain interest. With Sarah's permission, I used a scenario in my college class to help my students successfully understand the emotional value of money. I highly recommend this book to everyone trying to get a handle on money management.

Excellent book -- both practical and thoughtful
By Stephen Wendel
This is both a thoughtful and practical book. Dr Newcomb dives into why so many of us struggle to manage our money effectively and relate to the job market and our income in a healthy way. For good or for ill, money is all around us, and it's part of our how we survive and succeed -- but yet we avoid talking about it, and treat the product of our own labor in a twisted love-hate manner.
She dives into why that happens, and how we can take a calm step back to analyze our "personal economy" - our income, our expenses, and our goals. Then, to top it off, she gives practical tools (from concepts to fill-in-the-blank worksheets) on how to actually do this in your daily life - with a more sensible clear approach to budgeting, and a better way to manage our money overall. Well done!
