Believe it or not, the first known pop-up element in a book appeared in an astrological manuscript in 1306. During the ensuing centuries, movable mechanics were used in more and more books--but only for adults. In the 1700s a British bookseller came up with the idea of illustrating well-known children's stories with movable flaps of paper. The rest, as they say, is history. Now aspiring paper mechanics (creative engineer-artists who create dimensional and movable books, otherwise known as pop-ups) can learn the how-tos and wherefores of this marvelous craft. From tip-ons to dummies to glue knock-outs, all the intricacies of pop-up production are outlined and explained.

Readers are invited to take apart the sample pop-ups (as long as they promise to put them back together!) to determine exactly how each score folds and where each glue point is. Instructions are somewhat advanced, but the dimensional samples and the step-by-step photographic essay on how a pop-up is made will ease the journey. Grade 3 Up-Two eminent paper engineers offer a nearly encyclopedic gallery of moving effects, with more than 50 different working models. They are set-when appropriate-on flaps, making the inner workings visible, and include precise design and assembly notes, all sandwiched between a partial history of pop-ups and an artist's-eye view of the production stages of this popular art form. A commanding safety note warns children away from craft knives, and though most of the effects require dexterity and patience to reproduce, the authors have flagged easier projects. All of the models, even the spectacular, full-spread opener, are constructed of white, undecorated stock, but the authors urge aspiring paper engineers to expand the possibilities by experimenting with combined effects or even inventing new ones. Despite some sketchy peripherals-the opening history stops with Jonathan Miller's The Human Body (Viking, 1983)-this book is not only a work of art in itself, but also a practical manual that takes a huge step past Barbara Valenta's Pop-o-mania (Dial, 1997). If you are thinking of tackling making pop ups in any form - BUY THIS BOOK FIRST!!!!! I have recently bought at least 6 "how to" books about pop ups and THIS is the one that defines ALL the others!!! After this book, they all made perfect sense on how to construct!!! The editors and designers of this book are definitely in the GENIUS category!!! What a perfect idea to actually SHOW you each example that you can see premade and totally understand what you are going to do!! TOTAL GENIUS!!! After this book, I am going to buy every one David Carter has published and check out any possible ones by James Diaz! They are wonderfully creative and intelligent, no doubt!!!! BUY THIS BOOK- you will see what I mean!

A pricey but very exhaustive inventory of paper pop up designs. Best for grown ups only.

As a recent arrival in the ranks of popup lovers, I should probably defer to those whose popup works are more extensive than mine. I can offer only my limited work using a few source books, of which this is the outstanding resource. The book demonstrates a very large number of paper devices by keeping each demonstration very small but extremely clear. I admit I had no idea before reading this book that there are so many possibilities for making paper objects move in interesting ways. If you are one of the curious folk who must see the popup work in order to understand it, then this elegant book might be for you, although the price is not within everyone's range.

If you ever wonder how the end product looks like, this is the book. By having the final product in front of me, it allows me to see where my mistakes are, how the mechanism works. I like that it includes wheels and pull-outs. It has beginner as well as complicated popups. It does not really have step by step instructions so you might need a supplementary book. But like I said, I like being able to touch and see the end product. I have not seen any pop up books with the actual product in the book except this one. I like the contrast between the colored background and the white pop-up because it clearly shows the construction. As much as I like the neon colored pages, it doesn't help me with reading the small black font - it creates a scintillating optical illusion (this is a negative). This is a book to use over and over again as you progress with your skills in paper engineering

the binding falls apart pretty fast so you have to be very gentle with ...

Book is missing the pull-out keyboard and does not come with perforated workbook pages. I had to make photo copies the entire semester. Additionally, the binding falls apart pretty fast so you have to be very gentle with it.

I would not recommend this for those who take notes on textbook pages because the paper is very glossy.

Comprehensive and thorough

Having been a student with Harvey Miller probably makes my review somewhat biased. Nevertheless, this is an excellent book if you're a student or professional in the field of GIS and need to know how GIS can be applied in transportation, or vice versa, knowing tranportation, this book will tell you what GIS can do for you. Mind you, this is not for the fainthearted, this is solid academic work and presumes some academic knowlegde prior to reading this book. It is specked with references that are hard to get, and you are likely to spend more time in the library reading up on the bibliography than digesting the actual text. Still, if GIS-T is your line of research, you cannot avoid having this book. It is by far one of the most comprehensive I have seen. It is clear that the authors posess solid knowledge and have covered a wide field and left nothing out. It may have a rather inhibitive price; in hindsight it was well worth the money spent.

This book is a great first attempt at a book that has been needed for a long time. It covers the everyday practical parts of managing a MySQL server.

I have been hungry for this book for a long time. Most books about MySQL focus on the SQL language and give you long chapters on how to form complex queries. Or, they dive deep into MySQL commands command and the use of my.cnf. I have a bookshelf full of these books. None have given me help making backups on-the-fly without interrupting customer services or preventing mysqldump from failing with error 2013. This book, "MySQL Admin Cookbook", covers everyday issues database administrators (DBA) face.

I'm calling it a "first attempt" because you'll get a taste of the practical side but the authors don't give you all the tools. It covers transferring connections settings between different machines with a network share. Good. It doesn't talk enough about the tools every MySQL DBA know, like MaatKit, openarkkit, mycheckpoint, mysqltuner and so many more.

Another example, Chapter 5 covers the common details for loading large data sets using the LOAD DATA INFILE command. Common. But it doesn't talk about how you can replace a CSV or MyIsam files directly with tools like mysql-replace-tables-live.

If you are NOT a DBA and MySQL is something you're using, I FULLY recommend this book. If you are a DBA, unless your new, you will find most of this book covers things you have already learned on your own.

This book starts like a very good HOWTO with replication in chapter one without mentioning
the monitoring tool mk-heartbeat. By chapter six it get cooking with good tips on analyzing, monitoring and configuring your MySQL and then simmers to an ending with managing users and schemas.

I look forward to Rev2 of this book when it really gets cooking.

Book needs a newer edition

Book is written for mysql 5.0 and 5.1 and contains at least 3 chapters on using mysql tools (mysql administrator and query browser) that have already been ended.

A good place for Novices and Intermediates to start

Usually I try to avoid the cookbook type of computer books because usually the 'recipies', often messy scripts or pages of obfuscated code, seem only to work for the authors and not for me. So I had a little trepidation when I was asked to review the MySQL Admin Cookbook. Daniel Schneller and Udo Schwedt manage to pack a lot of very solid information into 360 pages of text that would work for novice to intermediate MySQL DBAs and provide some food for thought for seasoned DBAs.
What I liked: The material was presented with the reasons behind the recipe and pointers to useful tools. Yes, all the material is in the manuals but sometimes there are too many trees in the way for a novice so see the trees. In very calm ,concise language, the authors tackle successfully a wide range of DBA chores in a way that is easy to follow.

I would not hesitate to give this book to a novice to intermediate DBA as a tool to help them work through replication, configuration, indexes and tools.

What I did not like: Time has marched on and the references to MySQL Administrator make a few tiny sections seem dated but I am sure only the Workbench team knew what that product would evolve into. Also the section on monitoring is a bit light but then most DBAs do not need to wade in as deeply as the book goes let alone into Enterprise Monitor or other tools.

So this book is a solid four out of five stars and well worth being brought home by those new to MySQL DBA work and those seeking 'recipes' for thier instances.
