Good book, bad errors

The text is rife with errors; the example problems, especially. I have spent an unnecessary amount of time attempting to debug the author's intent in his example problems. MS Draw diagrams are presented in the text (I assume for a manager's perspective) that provide little useful information.
However, the text covers a great deal of information that is NOT available in most power electronics texts available to undergraduates. I have taken classes that provide a technician's understanding of the concepts presented in this text, but the book delves into the details of what a technician takes for granted. If a graduate student's knowledge is at the top, and a technician's understanding is at the bottom, a thorough understanding of this text will bring a technician to a senior undergraduate level.
I also appreciate the paucity of integrals in the text. It goes to show that an engineer needs to have only a working knowledge of calculus to be successful in the workplace.
The coverage of SCADA is scant--the real push in SmartGrids. If you are interested in learning about new developments in power engineering, this books is not for you. However, if you need to have a grounding in the basic principles, and would like to confuse yourself with lengthy derivations of basic formulae, this text is strongly recommended.
Another note worth expounding is that each chapter provides a list of references. Tesla, Westinghouse, and Edision would feel perfectly comfortable with this text, as most of the references are dated around the early 1900s.
The fabrication of the book itself is poor. It is obvious that the pages were made from cheap paper. The binding began to fail after two weeks of use.
In the field, we often are faced with impossible deadlines. Sometimes we have to sacrifice quality to meet a deadline. If anything else, the errors in the text prove that no product is ever truly completed before it ships.

Master of it's Class

This book is high quality from cover to cover. The explanations are in-depth and the material makes sense. My professor suggested it may be slight overkill but its nice having a book that gives me additional information to the slides being covered in class.

Great book for an introduction to the electrical grid

If you're interested in getting a basic overview of the electrical distribution system and the devices within, this book does a great job providing a general overview. This is a really great book to have when working in this industry.
