Excellent book for Arduino adventurers

I have read many Arduino project books. The Adventures in Arduino is very well organized with various fun projects for the young Arduino adventurers.
The book is very well organized with colorful illustrations for building the circuits and detailed code for each project. The code can also be downloaded from a link provided in the the book. The book also mentioned that there are video instructions on the website. However, at the time of this review, I cannot locate the videos on the website yet.
Here are the general descriptions of the projects in this book :
- Adventure 1 : Setting up your Arduino
Provides an excellent introduction to Arduino with its components and software installation
- Adventure 2 : Reading from Sensors
Introduction to simple Arduino programming using LED and a potentiometer
- Adventure 3 : Working with Servos
Working with servo motors and building a combination safe
- Adventure 4 : Using Shift registers
Working with a shift register IC and building your name in lights. Introduction to programming in loops using functions
- Adventure 5 : Playing Sounds
Working with a buzzer and programming a wind chime using arrays and loops
- Adventure 6 : Adding Libraries
Making a crystal ball with capacity sensing circuit using code libraries

Really For Adults - or People that love to read and self-learn.

This has to be one of the best-written technical books I've read in a very long time. The writing is perfection - crystal clear and precise. And there is the problem; in theory this book is designed for 11-15 year olds. There aren't a lot of people that age that would spend all that time reading this book. Honestly, they are looking for more pictures with descriptions and gettin' 'er done, than elegant prose.
A person that can take the time and effort to read this book will be richly rewarded with an amazing understanding of Arduino. I think the book is sold way short by trying to be for 11-15 year olds. Honestly, this book is just the most perfect detailed guide on how to get started with Arduino. In that mission this book is a massive success. On the catering to kids, it is a miserable failure.
There is one strange quirk about the book - it is a British book and refers to stores in England. It also uses some British terms that are more or less evident.
I knew absolutely nothing about Arduino when I opened this book. I purchased a starter kit at Christmas and it sat in the box for six months. This book gave me the courage to open that box and start using the awesome kit I bought. Yeah, this book should be included in the starter kit, it is just that good.
My 22 year old son that teaches high school physics looked at the book. He knows the target audience age really well - his first comment, yeah - no way would a high school or junior high student open this book and use it. There is way too much text. As a companion piece and teaching, this works great. As a standalone, to many words, not enough simple doing.
This book is absolutely incredible after you buy into reading. I did a lot of programming a long time ago - so I understand programming computers. I was also a math minor for a while - so logic and flow charts are part of my brain. And I love to teach myself by reading books and trying things - actually dislike being shown how to do something. I'm the perfect person for this book. And I'm around 4 times the target age.
I couldn't believe how perfect the adventures were (that's fun talk for projects or chapters). Each section built on the previous chapter. Each chapter was easy to be successful. And some critical things were taught each time. I learned how to set up, and program an Arduino. The projects end up being pretty complex. Frankly, if you can get through these 9 projects - you're totally ready for all the Arduino projects in Instructables (a community sourced DIY website that has a lot of Arduino projects among a lot of other cool things).
You honestly don't need any particular technical skills to learn from this book. Just a desire to play around with an Arduino to get an idea of what they can do. It is a fantastic starting point.

Another great "Adventures" book

This is a pretty solid intro to the Arduino and is suitable for beginners of all ages. The first chapters cover the usual stuff: what is Arduino; how to install the Arduino software; various Arduino components and what they do. What I especially liked was the clear explanation of what a breadboard is and how the rows/columns are connected (or not). Furthermore, the color photos of Arduino-to-breadboard arrangements have green lines on them so that you can readily see what jumper wires and components are connected (or not). This is quite important, considering that the books I've had so far--along with SparkFun circuit projects--aren't always detailed enough (i.e. you can't necessarily see all the connections clearly).
One of the early projects is building a message status sign, where you turn a knob to change which message (on a box you make) has an LED on next to it. While the project is fine, it requires some soldering, which may be an optimistic expectation for someone just starting out with the Arduino. After this, the book continues on with digital input and a variety of challenging but educational projects. What's required for each project is clearly listed and shown. In addition, the book points readers to the "fritzing" website, which offers more projects, tutorials and such.
All in all, a great book for learning Arduino, electronics and some programming. I also recommended two other books in this series, namely "Adventures in Python" and "Adventures in Raspberry Pi."
