With Silent Screams is Nathan Garret's third adventure. It's a complete story on its own and does a good job of explaining the key concepts and characters, but tons of significance and context would be lost without knowing Nate's background first. Best to not to start here - go back to Crimes against Magic (book 1).
An old friend's murder throws Nate into a long battle of move and counter move all connected to a series of grizzly murders he helped investigate thirty years ago. The care and expertise with which McHugh plays with and builds off of these cliched starting points makes With Silent Screams an incredible ride and easily the best of the Hellequin series thus far. The pace is breakneck without glossing over anything or losing the reader and a fantastic level of tension and intrigue permeates the book.
One of the best things abut this installment is the flashbacks and current time are equally interesting. Don't know is McHugh is just finding a better balance, if the proximity to current day of the flashbacks helps, or if it's because of how completely the stories are intertwined. Probably all three. The net effect is that I didn't experience the slight drag the previous books had whenever going to the past timeline.
The supporting cast is developing wonderfully and there are both great new additions and reappearances from old favorites. The mythos is expanding naturally and logically and everything from the magic system to the way various mythological figures coexist is compelling and engrossing.
Overall this third Hellequin novel brings the already strong series up several notches and builds great momentum for future books. Highly recommended.

RIVETING

Steve McHugh's Hellequin Chronicles are absolutely riveting! Initially I was confused as to the order of the books, but after some much necessary research, The Hellequin Chronicles (In order they were released) are:
* Book 1 - Crimes Against Magic
* Book 2 - Born of Hatred
* Novella - Infamous Reign
* Book 3 - With Silent Screams
(be sure to archive this list for reference as you're reading the Chronicles!)
There are no spoiler alerts here, just be prepared to be riveted to your seat for an entire weekend, or longer, whatever it takes to read this series - WITHOUT interruption. Be kind - warn your spouse first before you dig in, it may be key to maintaining a healthy relationship whilst you're immersed in Hellequin's tales.

Very much enjoyed this book.

I very much enjoyed this book as well as the two previous books in the trilogy. Nate, aka..Hellequin, is rumored to be a boogieman and everyone gasps when they hear his name. But there is much, much more to him then something to be feared.
There's plenty of magic and magical characters to go around in this book. We have mention of Merlin, Hades, Leonardo, and King Aurthur, just to name a few. Then you have the trolls, Werewolves, etc... all tied in with Avalon.
There is plenty of magic and plenty of fighting to go around and I never found myself bored in the book at any time. The action is spread out in a way that the book never goes stagnant, and you're always excited to turn the next page. I read in bed which helps me to fall asleep, but I found myself many times fighting sleep, just so I could keep reading. The character development is very good as well as the world building.
The best part about the Hellequin Chronicles is that each book in the series can stand on it's own with no problems. The ending of the last book was a fine ending, yet left open to future books in the series (I hope). :)
All in all, if you're a sci fi/fantasy fan, I think you will enjoy this book.
