Like Something Out of a J-Dorama!
By Presea
There was something intriguing and exciting about this book when I first read the synopsis. I’m always psyched to read stories about Filipino expats and with Be Careful What You Wish For happening in Japan of all places (one of my dream destinations), there was something serendipitous about this book falling into my hands.

The story is something akin to a popular J-Drama: a sweet and good-natured woman (Ana Madrigal) is in love with someone close to her (in this case, her colleague Daniel Sato) who cannot see her as anything else other than their current relations. Opportunity comes knocking on Ana’s door in the person of Ken Nakamura, and he enlists her in a charade to throw off the media who, as we all know, are too nosy for their own good. In the process of this complicated pseudo-relationship, Ana gets what she really wanted, i.e., to be noticed as a woman by Daniel. But how does that sit with Ken? You’d be surprised at how he turns things around.

I’ve read a lot of stories that use this charade plot where the ones in the pretend relationship start to have romantic feelings for each other. I’m not averse to such familiar tropes, though I look for the author’s fresh take on an overused plot. C.P. Santi definitely gave me something different in the form of quirky characters, witty dialogues, and a fantastic setting. Ana felt so real that it was like she’s someone I know. Her issues were relatable and authentic (I bet a lot of us have lamented over our lack of spontaneity in our lives at one point or another.), not to mention that her Pinoy-ness stood out in such a rich setting. The Japanese characters Daniel, Ken, Ai, and Yoshi also sounded authentic, and that’s something that likewise stood out given the author’s exposure to Japanese life and culture. But despite the dynamics of Filipino and Japanse traits in the characters, I never felt alienated or confused with the interactions happening in the story. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed the banter between Ana’s group of friends and Ken’s best buddy Yoshi. Even if the cast was such a big group of people with diverse backgrounds and personalities, Santi made them stand out in their own way—they had distinct voices and images in my head when they spoke.

With regards to the love triangle of Ana, Daniel, and Ken, there wasn’t anything groundbreaking as the trope was very familiar, although I have to say I enjoyed Ana and Ken’s ribbing and occasional bickering. I would’ve wished for more page time for Daniel to justify the fulfillment of Ana’s dream. It would’ve been an interesting thing to see more of Daniel’s personality and how he’d try to contend for Ana’s affections. Meanwhile, I found Ken to be a sweet and adorable love interest. I appreciated Santi’s inclusion of his back story to give further depth to his love ’em and leave ’em philosophy when it comes to relationships. Ken was as much as fleshed out as Ana and that’s something I was really happy about. The path to their romantic HEA had me swooning especially during Ana’s transformation (I’m a sucker for makeovers!). When Ken realized he was already falling in love with her, swoon-fest ensued. I had pictured him as either Jun Matsumoto (blame it on Hana Yori Dango) Shibue Jyoji (hello, Tuxedomask!), or Yu Shirota (because Tezuka Kunimitsu). Who wouldn’t swoon over these good-looking, real-life Japanese actors?

Perhaps one of the things that held me off from giving this novel 5 stars were the inclusion of several Japanese phrases. Other readers who are not as assimilated into Japanese culture could find the language switching derailing. I also found the change in Ana and Ken’s relationship near the tail end to be all too sudden. They just came to realize their mutual feelings for each other and then all of a sudden it was let’s-take-this-relationship-to-the-next-level thing. I felt that part was unnecessary or it could have been paced a lot better.

But hey, you still need to read this book for the feels, especially if you’re the type who’s into J-Doramas, anime, and Korean series. I’m even more thrilled there’s going to be stories set for Ana’s friends. Now that’s something to anticipate!

this is heart-warming story that's also a perfect summer read!
By Claire
Ana is a Filipina physicist based on Japan and has just turned 32. She was supposed to have a great night with her friends, but her birthday celebration turned sour when she saw the man of her dreams, Dan, with a buxom lady in her arms. Totally hurt and confused, Ana drank to her heart's desire as she nursed her broken heart. Her friends encouraged her to be more daring and look for a man who would replace Dan in her heart.

A few weeks, an airport and a bikini in an orange-colored luggage later, Ana met the most handsome man she met, the one who initially sent flutters to her stomach. Ken Nakamura, the hottest A-list actor in Japan, was enamored by her exotic foreign beauty and went to great lengths to search for Ana after paparazzi had mistaken them to be a couple. Soon he unveiled his plans of having her as a pretend girlfriend and showing the world how great a couple they are.

But this pretend relationship has to end somewhere, right? Where would this broken hearts go if that time comes?

I had just finished watching one of my favorite local TV shows (a romantic one, at that!) when I decided to peruse this book. The feeling of kilig was still there when I started reading about Ana & Ken. I felt the chemistry and sparks (I know, too cliche, right, but that's what I really felt) among the characters. I think Ken was really sweet despite his choreographed overbearing qualities in front of the cameras. And Ana, although she was adamant and naive, she has this unique personality that made her personable and easy to love. No wonder Ken fell for her.

Aww, I can't help but sigh and smile and I can't take off this grin on my face. Ana and Ken just made me all gooey-eyed and "kilig" all over again! Be Careful What You Wish for is a story that's so wonderful and heart-warming in all the perfect ways. This is a believable romance with believable characters and settings. Stop me if you think I'm turning into a broken record here, ok? But really, Ana and Ken are perfect!

Big thanks to CP Santi for sharing with me this wonderful story. I know this book of hers had been what, five or six years in the making, and it all paid off. She was able to finish a story that many would love to see on a romantic movie or a TV series. What with all the wonderful characters and great storyline, I'm sure this would be a hit this summer! Two thumbs up to you Caryn!

a country I fell in love with when we visited it a few months ago
By Alveel Kaith C.
While you can find more horror and psychological thriller books in my shelf more than any other genre, I have a soft spot for romantic ones. These are the ones I read when I get too spooked out after three consecutive serial killer stories.

I got excited reading the blurb of Be Careful What You Wish For because the setting was in Japan, a country I fell in love with when we visited it a few months ago. Ana was nearing her "finish line" at 32, being all pressured to be the one for a someone. That someone preferably be his colleague at work, Dan. However, fate has something up her sleeve.

I am a sucker for stories where the guy doesn't pay attention to the girl until she sheds off her "ordinariness" but then, it's already too late. I always root for the ones who become these butterflies when they finally found someone who sees them beyond the cocoon they wrap themselves in. I like how Ana never felt desperate to be with someone even though the pressure was on. She wasn't that annoying girl who would throw herself to anyone just because she needs to be in a relationship. She may have gotten herself into a deal she wasn't prepared to pay the consequences for but she played it smartly. For that, I commend the author for giving us a main character who girls could look up to :)

I could've finished this in one night if I wasn't exhausted but I flew through the pages on my second night because I just can't wait another day to find out what happened next. Haha. Full of feels. Read this when you need a good sprinkle of love and humor. Bonus points for the helpful lesson in Filipino and Nihongo terms.
