Review
“Liberate yourself from the work-to-spend cycle and become a frugal hedonist! This is the inspired message in this life-changing gem of a book. In an age that is obsessed with consumer trinkets and oblivious to waste, the philosophy of frugal hedonism provides a welcome and necessary antidote. The simplicity of this message is profound. Be frugal and be free.”--Samuel Alexander, co-director of the Simplicity Institute
“An invaluable harvest of tips oozing with hedonistic wit and wonder. Packed with ideas about why and how we are to live with less to ensure we have a hell of a lot more.”--Meg Ulman, co-author of The Art of Free Travel
“What a terrific idea, a book showing how frugal living can be pleasurable. Not the kind of smug pleasure of the drop-out or the feeling of moral superiority that comes with driving a Prius (yes, that’s me), but real actual sensual pleasure… The free-est and most contented people pretty much follow the advice in The Art of Frugal Hedonism.”--Clive Hamilton, author of Growth Fetish and co-author of Affluenza (from the foreword)
“Total page turner… I just ate it up”--Davina Adamson

So far I've read about a third of the book. I like dipping in and out of it, and the book's structure makes this easy to do with ideas and mindsets in each chapter. The author is fun to spend time with and has lived the life she teaches. Her philosophy is the perfect, playful antidote to our American consumer culture. Yes you can have pleasure, fun and adventure without spending a boatload of bucks. Read this book for inspiration when you are feeling glum or broke and then go indulge.

I liked the concept of frugal hedonism (i.e. Enjoy life cheaply). If you've read about minimalism or books like (Early Retirement Extreme, which I highly recommend), there isn't too much new here (sorry to the authors, though it was still an enjoyable book). It gives you the basic tips of bring lunch to work and don't buy drinks when you're out. Still, there are some gems. I did enjoy their clear love for life. The book has an Australian bent but still applicable to an American like me. I wish things would have been expounded more. The book contains many chapters each on a single topic. Some chapters are less than a page long. I wish the chapters were longer and more in depth. Has the internet destroyed our ability to focus to such a degree that we can only read and write chapters (or blog posts or book reviews) that are only a few hundred words?

Enjoyable book and a light read (with some very thought provoking implications). I've been practicing permaculture for a few years now and there were some novel chapters in this book that I enjoyed. I would definitely recommend it to friends and family members who mindlessly consume their ways through their daily lives as described in the beginning of this book.
