Live like a lady of the '50s, and you can skip this read

First of all, I love Stanger's show and her bitchy ways. I think she is tough and funny and ambitious. In her book, she gives great advice on acting like a true lady and following a few firm rules, one of which is no premarital cohabitation, no exceptions. This is a driving force behind her philosophy. It's a pretty good read!

This book was a quick, easy read that gave a lot of good pointers. I skimmed over the parts that didn't pertain to my current situation and really enjoyed the parts that were relevant to me. Good read! Great tips/pointers!

Hmmm... It's okay I suppose

I read this book in a few hours. It's captivating enough that I read it all the way through and the characters are believable. This story just lacks a little depth I think, it's not one that drags you in deeply and makes you feel strongly for the characters, which should happen considering the events in the book. I also felt that towards the end the writer was in a hurry to finish and wrap everything up, although I'm judging, because there's no way I could write a novel!

My last issue would be a few rather glaring grammatical errors. They weren't enough to detract from the story, but I was a little frustrated by the incorrect use of your/you're, they're/their and other simple homophones or words. But that's probably just me being pedantic.

So my advice? Don't read it if you're hung up on editing issues, but if that's not the case, it's an interesting enough read, just don't expect to be thinking about it days after you've finished.

The Autumn Review for The Unloved

I'm so glad I had the opportunity to read this book. I'm sure I would have bought it at some point anyway though, because I like this author. The Unloved was certainly an emotional journey that had my heart aching one minute and swooning the next.

At a very young age, Julie learned to hide. She had to. Her mother is a drug addicted stripper and often brought men home who made attempts at Julie. She found comfort in Nick, who also had a rough home life. Nick's father was an abusive alcoholic. Together they came to rely on each other and became best friends. But when Nick is sent away, Julie had to learn how to be ok on her own.

Then, two years later Nick returns. It's their senior year of high school and they're both anxious to get out of their situations at home. Their friendship turns into a romantic relationship. One where they both learn to open their hearts and believe in love and being loved.

Both Nick and Julie touched a place in my heart. While I never experienced this type of situation personally, I do have family members that have. It was difficult to read about the abuse Nick's father gave. His mother did her best to remove them from a bad situation, but also had hope that her husband would recover and change. That was hard for Nick to stomach. I would've felt the same as Nick. There was definitely no love lost between he and his father. He did have a nice relationship with his mother despite their differences about his father.

In some ways I felt that Julie was more vulnerable. Once her older brother left home, she was left to fend for herself and her younger brother. The constant sexual attempts on her made me sick. Her mother was an addict, completely selfish, and manipulative. I couldn't wait for Julie to get out of there. However, I did wonder about what happened with her younger brother Cole.

Overall, I really enjoyed The Unloved. Yes, it was emotional, but it does have a happy ending despite all the heart ache. There were some extremely difficult parts in the book to read, so I would only recommend this book to an 18+ reader.

The Unloved

The Unloved is one of those books where all of these awful things happen and in the midst of it all, a guy and a girl are just trying to find some happiness. I really was moved by the story. (I was just typing "I really enjoyed the story" but that isn't really 100% accurate. A ton of awful, awful things happened to two really good people, and I didn't enjoyed that, but The Unloved is a great book.) The Unloved drops you into the lives of Julie and Nick, and through all of the horrible things they have to endure, I was just wishing for them to get a happy ending. The Unloved is one of those books that makes you feel for the characters, and even though there is abuse and loss, there is also love and growth and a beautiful story about two beautiful people.

Let's start with Julie. Man, talk about people having it rough. Poor Julie. I just felt so bad for her. I couldn't believe that she blamed herself for everything, and that she assumed that everyone thought the worst about her. She was a total victim of her circumstances, and she was just doing the best she could.

Nick is just so unique. I don't know quite how to describe him. He is patient and loyal. Brave and kind. He has this quite reserve surrounding him, but when it comes to someone he loves he will pretty much do anything for them. And he totally loves Julie. I could tell that from page one. I loved Nick even more than Julie.

The Unloved is my favorite Jennifer Snyder book that I have read so far. It is well written, and touching. It is so nice to see something good come out of a series of horrible things. I couldn't stop reading The Unloved and I didn't want to. I had to know what was going to happen them. It is just one of those books that gets to you. The Unloved got under my skin. Fans of the more gritty contemporaries and realistic fiction will like The Unloved.

Buddha Shakyamuni mainly presented Hinayana and Sutra Mahayana teachings, while Guru Padmasambhava taught the Vajrayana. Both revealed the complete and perfect path to awakening so that individuals of all capacities would benefit. The absolute level of the Buddha's teaching is beyond conception. If it didn't go beyond the conceptual level, there would be no need to change our normal way of understanding things. To help us realize the primordial nature, Buddha Shakyamuni and Guru Padmasambhava repeatedly taught that we must transcend clinging to our ordinary dualistic conceptions, narrow attitudes, close mindedness, traditional rules, beliefs, and limitations. The enlightened activities of Guru Rinpoche's eight emanations are especially powerful and effective in destroying the solidity of our dualistic concepts and fixed opinions, and in awakening us to true freedom. Inspiring and Insightful

One often hears about the famous 8 manifestations of Padmasambhava yet one rarely can find detailed information on them. Here the Venerable Khenpos bring to life the essence of Guru Rimpoche and each of his manifestations. We learn not only the history of each manifestation but their significance toward our understanding of the true nature of reality. In addition each description ends w a description of a meditation and when/why we might perform that practice. A great book.

This wonderful book by Khenchen Palden Sherab Rinpoche and Khenpo Tsewang Dongyal Rinpoche offers truly inspiring teachings on the activities and blessings of Padmasambhava, and how our minds create and manifest the displays which we experience as our lives and the world in which we live. How our habitual patterns, ways of perceiving ourselves, our relationships, situations, and the entire phenomenal world in which we believe ourselves to exist in, are influenced and ultimately manifested solely as a display of mind ~ negative, selfish habitual clingings and tendencies bringing about suffering for ourselves and others, and how, as we cultivate and awaken qualities of the true nature of our minds, such as love, compassion, wisdom and joy, our entire experience and perception of ourselves and the world becmes more beautiful, loving, and wonderful. Black Power masks Black Pain, says Williams, a social worker and founder of a successful public relations firm. Back when black was beautiful, we felt comfortable in our dark skin and 'nappy' hair. Decades later, that sense of pride has morphed into bling that hides the pain of poverty and racism. The result has been depression expressed through violence, addiction, suicide as well as obesity and hypertension. The stoicism blacks are taught in order to not appear weak in the eyes of other black people only leads to denial and isolation. Williams argues persuasively that blacks are not alone. She begins with her own tribulations with depression. From there, she examines how depression is expressed by black men, women and children, and shares the stories of scores of others: rich, poor, successful, incarcerated. This liberal insertion of case reports coupled with a plethora of block quotes can bog down the text. However, Williams is dedicated to convincing her fellow African-Americans that assistance is readily available, whether through counseling, medicine or self-help: [T]here is no need for you to suffer alone or in silence. A Reading Must

This book was so powerful, that when sharing a few passages with my husband, it became clear that each of us had to have our own copy. We have since recommended this book to numerous friends. It is the book selection for my book club this month. Though difficult to read, with the staggering statistics, this book explains so many of the problems plaguing the African American Community. Each of us has family members that are recognized in these pages. This book is well written and goes in to so many avenues that affect people of all ages. Every educator of students of color should read this book. Those working in social services should make this a must in their professional library. Every member of my immediate family is reading the book.

outstanding title with a social context for mental illness and the African American community

Mental health issues are a source of embarrasment,and of a desire to stay under the radar in the Black American community. Williams's book may help families and individuals come to grips, and realize that there are sources of help and save lives and communities. Frequently, the sense of isolation that many people with a mental illness have is exacerbated due to a feeling that these illnesses will be viewed as less tolerable in found in a people still viewed by some in America as genetically, and socially inferior. If it helps people exhale and get help it will be valuable. I recommend it highly for families dealing with a mental illness who feel isolated and ashamed.

I am half way through it but terrie hasn't described any direct interventions that brought her out of depression. But a good book in general. I recommend it white therapist as they/we need to learn the black experience as we provide therapeutic support.

Susan Archer Mann is Professor of Sociology and Director of Women's and Gender Studies at the University of New Orleans. She is the author of Doing Feminist Theory: From Modernity to Postmodernity (OUP, 2012).

Ashly Suzanne Patterson is an instructor of Sociology and Feminist Thought at both Southeastern Louisiana University and Delgado Community College.
