Beato s Delhi offers a pictorial history of Delhi, brought vividly to life through the visual virtuosity of Felice A. Beato, the famous nineteenth-century photographer who came to India to record the last embers of the 1857 Mutiny , and Jim Masselos who, in 1997, retraced Beato s footsteps and photographed the same sites as far as possible.

By the time Beato reached Delhi in January 1858, the British had already subdued the city, so he could not record the military campaign itself. However, his lens was perhaps the first to capture the battleground and other places of note in that campaign, providing for posterity some unique views of Old Delhi before substantial parts of it were demolished in the aftermath of 1857, or radically redeveloped as the years progressed.

Beato s luminous views are juxtaposed with Masselos s present-day photographs of the bustling metropolis, shedding light on how the face of Delhi has transformed in the intervening 154 years. Supplemented with an illuminating text by Masselos and Narayani Gupta, Beato s Delhi is a moving testament to the resilience of this ever-evolving city.

About the Author
Jim Masselos is an honorary reader in history at the University of Sydney. He has written extensively on Indian history and culture, including aspects of the history of Bombay. He is the author of Indian Nationalism and Towards Nationalism, and co-author of Dancing to the Flute: Music and Dance in Indian Art. His most recent publications are The City in Action: Bombay Struggles for Power and the co-authored Bombay Then and Mumbai Now, the edited volume The Great Empires of Asia, as well as numerous journal articles and book chapters.

Narayani Gupta has been a consultant with INTACH, after she retired as professor of history at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. She is the author of Delhi between Two Empires, 1803-1931, co-editor of an annotated version of Percival Spear s Delhi: Its History and Its Monuments, and co- author of Delhi Then and Now. A founder-member of the Conservation Society of Delhi, she was a member of the Delhi Urban Art Commission and advisor for Delhi s Heritage Buildings: A Listing.

Excellent Text for Hypnotists and Dentists Alike

Having been a hypnotist for over twenty years, I purchased this book with the idea of reenforcing my knowledge of how hypnosis can help people with fears of the dentist. I came away far more knowledgeable about the topic than I can tell you. This paperback addresses the cause of dental fears, the history of dentistry, how hypnosis can be used to to address pain management, dealing with young children and has scripts for consulting hypnotists.
This paperback is not merely for hypnotists, but for dentists as well. An entire section is devoted to dentists and explains how they can make their patients more comfortable with their work. Beryl discusses being trained by Gerald Kein, one of the leading hypnosis instructors in the world. Mr. Kein was a student of Dave Elman who worked with doctors using hypnosis. This book follows that intellectual lineage.
This book is a must for hypnotist interested in dealing with tooth grinding, dental fears, pain management, braces, nutrition and many other related topics. Dentists will benefit as well. It is incredibly comprehensive.
I cannot recommend HypnoDontics enough.

Great Supporting Information

I bought your book at NGH convention to add more knowledge on the topic of Hypnodontics as I work more with dentists. The information provided including detailed case studies, script examples and references was appropriate to working with medical professionals and was VERY helpful. The level of detail was outstanding! The work was still interesting and readable for non medical folks.

Not as thorough as it should be

This book was required for a course; it is brief in its explanations. The interventions are short considering the spectrum of practice for an OTA is largely interventions. A longer focal point on interventions and the application of interventions in the context of an OTA's practice would be highly beneficial.

Important for an OTA

This is a required text for Occupational Therapy Assistants as in it is part of our booklist BUT it is very useful with information that is pretty timeless. If is NOT required, it is still a very important book and would be worth a rental to help over the humps although you may just want to own it. I know many COTAs that keep it as their main reference even after school and certification testing. WARNING: It is a DRY read but more helpful than most out there.

Used this for 3 classes that all used the 3rd ed. Didnt have much trouble keeping up, chapters in this book are one ahead of the 3rd ed. Missing a few small things but has a whole extra chapter that the newest ones does not. Great deal for what I paid and will probably keep this as a refrence for later.

Not a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow

It seems to me that Sue Teele had to search hard for a new spin on the multiple intelligences of learning in order to create "her own" theory. The analogy of learning as compared to rainbows was cumbersome and did not seem to follow a smooth path of thought. If a reader's main desire is to learn about the multiple intelligences, this would not be the best choice in literature. However, on the bright side, Teele includes a chapter with sample lesson plans which incorporate the multiple intelligences.

Not a Stand-Alone Resource

Doesn't Stand Alone
I bought this book after reading positive reviews thinking it could help me prepare myself as there are no antenatal classes available in my area. Unfortunately, this is NOT a stand-alone resource. Whenever it gets to something that sounds useful it says "refer to the prompt cards you'll receive in class" or "listen to the CD available in class" or "this is a difficult technique that you need to practice with a qualified teacher". Very frustrated to have paid for what seems like a very long advertisement for classes I can't attend.

Poorly Edited/Proof-read
In any number of places there are what look like cut-and-paste accidents where sentences trail away into nothing or there is a sudden random capitalization of an insignificant word like "TO". While it doesn't detract from the meaning I found the unprofessional presentation made me feel less inclined to take the content seriously.

Lacks References and Blames Women
While I was expecting this to be a book based on hands-on experience rather than research, I found it deeply frustrating that the author tries to add a tone of scientific reassurance by mentioning various studies but never references them adequately so that the reader can actually follow up and learn more. "A study in Texas" doesn't mean anything! I want references dammit! Furthermore I found it really disturbing that the author repeatedly suggests that if your birth isn't natural, pain free and without any vaginal tearing that it's because the mother has failed (to relax enough, to practice enough, to eat appropriately or what-have-you).

If you are pregnant you NEED to read this book

I'm so glad I found hypnobirthing! I stumbled over it and now can't imagine having a baby any other way.
This book has given me the confidence to birth my baby by explaining everything that is happening during labour so I can be prepared for what's coming and know how to deal with it. This is the hypnobirthing bible.
The audio files don't come with the ebook but can be purchased from [...] BUT if you are doing a hypnobirthing class you will be given this CD.
I am looking forward to a calm and relaxing birth!

I had a pain free labour .... well a bit of pain

Well I had a mainly pain free labour, but it may be because it was my seventh and first homebirth after 5 births at hospital. Definitely a good read for anyone wanting to learn more about having a natural birth. Mine were all drug free and I kind of didn't want someone else's system for how to do it, as I must have been doing something right myself. But the breathing and meditations must have helped me for thus birth. Also setting the scene and feeling totally relaxed with music and scent and lighting, without car trips and bright lights.
