Black Pain: It Just Looks Like We're Not Hurting, by Terrie M. Williams

Terrie Williams knows that Black people are hurting. She knows because she's one of them.

Terrie had made it: she had launched her own public relations company with such clients as Eddie Murphy and Johnnie Cochran. Yet she was in constant pain, waking up in terror, overeating in search of relief. For thirty years she kept on her game face of success, exhausting herself daily to satisfy her clients' needs while neglecting her own.

Terrie finally collapsed, staying in bed for days. She had no clue what was wrong or if there was a way out. She had hit rock bottom and she needed and got help.

She learned her problem had a name -- depression -- and that many suffered from it, limping through their days, hiding their hurt. As she healed, her mission became clear: break the silence of this crippling taboo and help those who suffer.

Black Pain identifies emotional pain -- which uniquely and profoundly affects the Black experience -- as the root of lashing out through desperate acts of crime, violence, drug and alcohol abuse, eating disorders, workaholism, and addiction to shopping, gambling, and sex. Few realize these destructive acts are symptoms of our inner sorrow.

Black people are dying. Everywhere we turn, in the faces we see and the headlines we read, we feel in our gut that something is wrong, but we don't know what it is. It's time to recognize it and work through our trauma.

In Black Pain, Terrie has inspired the famous and the ordinary to speak out and mental health professionals to offer solutions. The book is a mirror turned on you. Do you see yourself and your loved ones here? Do the descriptions of how the pain looks, feels, and sounds seem far too familiar? Now you can do something about it.

Stop suffering. The help the community needs is here: a clear explanation of our troubles and a guide to finding relief through faith, therapy, diet, and exercise, as well as through building a supportive network (and eliminating toxic people).

Black Pain encourages us to face the truth about the issue that plunges our spirits into darkness, so that we can step into the healing light.

You are not on the ledge alone.

From Publishers Weekly
Black Power masks Black Pain, says Williams, a social worker and founder of a successful public relations firm. Back when black was beautiful, we felt comfortable in our dark skin and 'nappy' hair. Decades later, that sense of pride has morphed into bling that hides the pain of poverty and racism. The result has been depression expressed through violence, addiction, suicide as well as obesity and hypertension. The stoicism blacks are taught in order to not appear weak in the eyes of other black people only leads to denial and isolation. Williams argues persuasively that blacks are not alone. She begins with her own tribulations with depression. From there, she examines how depression is expressed by black men, women and children, and shares the stories of scores of others: rich, poor, successful, incarcerated. This liberal insertion of case reports coupled with a plethora of block quotes can bog down the text. However, Williams is dedicated to convincing her fellow African-Americans that assistance is readily available, whether through counseling, medicine or self-help: [T]here is no need for you to suffer alone or in silence. Help is out there. (Jan.)

Review
"The world is full of damaged people inflicting pain upon other damaged people. The time for sweeping issues such as depression under the rug in the African-American community has long since passed. We need to face our demons head on and defeat them so that we can truly appreciate all that life has to offer...This book will serve as an eye-opener to many and an inspiration to all." - Zane, NY Times Bestselling Author of Addicted and NAACP Image Award Winner for Breaking the Cycle

A Reading Must
By math diva
This book was so powerful, that when sharing a few passages with my husband, it became clear that each of us had to have our own copy. We have since recommended this book to numerous friends. It is the book selection for my book club this month. Though difficult to read, with the staggering statistics, this book explains so many of the problems plaguing the African American Community. Each of us has family members that are recognized in these pages. This book is well written and goes in to so many avenues that affect people of all ages. Every educator of students of color should read this book. Those working in social services should make this a must in their professional library. Every member of my immediate family is reading the book.

outstanding title with a social context for mental illness and the African American community
By A. Williams
Mental health issues are a source of embarrasment, and of a desire to stay under the radar in the Black American community. Williams's book may help families and individuals come to grips, and realize that there are sources of help and save lives and communities. Frequently, the sense of isolation that many people with a mental illness have is exacerbated due to a feeling that these illnesses will be viewed as less tolerable in found in a people still viewed by some in America as genetically, and socially inferior. If it helps people exhale and get help it will be valuable. I recommend it highly for families dealing with a mental illness who feel isolated and ashamed.

too many stories
By Tony A
I am half way through it but terrie hasn't described any direct interventions that brought her out of depression. But a good book in general. I recommend it white therapist as they/we need to learn the black experience as we provide therapeutic support.

Editors Susan Archer Mann and Ashly Suzanne Patterson pay close attention to the multiplicity and diversity of feminist voices, visions, and vantage points by race, class, gender, sexuality, and global location. It also provides extensive coverage of third-wave feminism, poststructuralism, queer theory, postcolonial theory, and transnational feminisms.

Review

"Reading Feminist Theory is significantly different from many textbooks in feminist theory because it examines in detail how feminists have historically addressed systemic forms of oppression other than gender. This enables readers to see historically how these forms of oppression have been connected."--Cecilia Herles, University of Georgia

"The inclusion of Foucault, and of selections from economic, ecofeminist, political, and postcolonial writings, makes this work more up to date than the competition."--Kelly Pemberton, George Washington University

Original Krantz, still the best (with an update)
By A Customer
Judith Krantz is not a writer you read for intellectual stimulation or spiritual enlightenment. But she is still one of the most entertaining mass-market novelists around, especially for women. All of her books feature strong, attractive (on the inside as well as the outside) yet believable women; and the plots are the stuff of modern age fairy tales. Scruples is her first novel, the one that put her on the map and was a smash hit in the late '70s. The heroine, Billy Winthrop Ikehorn (two other surnames follow eventually), may be the least likeable of all her heroines, yet is the most believable perhaps because she is flawed. The plot and settings feel slightly dated, but don't really distract from the pure mindless enjoyment of a "smashing read". One of the big attractions of the Krantz novels are the well-researched and absorbing "inside details" of the settings - of the Beverly Hills retail world, the movie industry and people of a certain class in Paris in the case of Scruples. If you read this book and like it, you'll want to grab all her books; if you hate it, don't bother with any others. I have been buying every single one of her books since Scruples up to her latest, Spring Collection, and hope she continues. They are great for reading in bed or in a hot tub.

(Update added in October 2011)

I just happened to run across this review that I wrote way back in 1997. I recently downloaded the Kindle version in a fit of nostalgia, and re-read it for the first time in at least 10 years. I still enjoyed it, but it does seem a lot more dated now. It is very much a product of its time, the mid to late 1970s (the original publication date is 1978). If you can read it as a work detailing a particular time and place in the past (most of the action is set in and around Beverly Hills, though there are significant portions set in Paris and New York) it almost can be regarded as a work of period fiction. As with any work that was written in the past, you cannot really judget it by current day standards - 1978 looks and sounds a lot more contemporary than say, Jane Austen's time or F. Scott Fitzgerald's time, but it certain is not 2011. (One obvious example is the free and easy attitude towards multiple partner, condomless sex, in an era before AIDS. It's rather quaint and sad in retrospect, and very '70s.) As a look back to the late 1970s and times that preceeded it, it's quite interesting. I am not comparing Judith Krantz to those two celebrated authors as a literary talent by any means, but she was always a highly entertaining chronicler of a very narrow segment of her times in an admittedly shallow, superficial way.

(I am taking off one star mainly because the Kindle edition is just full of odd spellings and even whole missing parts. Did no one proofread the digitized version and compare it with the original? Shame on you, Random House.)

They don't write them like this anymore
By Edward Aycock
"Scruples" was my final beach read for the summer of 2007. Does that mean I won't be reading anymore light fiction for the rest of the year? No, it just means that summer is over. I've never been deeply fascinated by the lives of the wealthy, but "Scruples" makes it look like a lot of fun.

Judith Krantz's novel is almost thirty years old now, (this was one of the books that kids in the 70s and 80s would sneak peeks at while adults weren't looking) so how does it hold up? Very, very well. I admit I was a little reluctant when I started the book because I initially found Krantz's style overly wordy, but once I got into it I was won over and Krantz held my attention the entire time.

And I wasn't just a passive reader; to my surprise, I learned things too. The sections describing Paris couture are interesting and I liked how Krantz laid out the entire process without once making it boring. Krantz (whose husband was a producer) also goes in-depth into Hollywood and deglamorizes the film industry so that we, along with Billy, are treated to the tediousness of the on-location process. Let's not forget the process of building up "Scruples" which is written with such flair that the excitement is infectious.

The characters in the novel are well developed, though I tended to enjoy the supporting characters more than the main ones. I had a hard time accepting that Billy was only in her mid-thirties. She seemed much older but maybe that was the point. I enjoyed Spider and Valentine at first but neither came alive so that by the end of the book, my interest in them had waned. I think this is because Krantz spends so much time on the movie business toward the end that Spider and Valentine fall into the background. When they re-emerge, I had discovered characters like Dolly Moon and Vito whom I enjoyed a lot more.

Great fun, great read.

E-textbooks...why can't anyone get it right?
By Gesualdo
I abandoned Barnes & Noble for e-textbooks because you could only use them on a regular computer - no eReaders, no mobile devices. This eBook for Kindle has the opposite problem - I can only read it on my Kindle, meaning if I need a bigger display or other, more robust features for studying, I'm out of luck.

As for the content, the text is not bad. I wish, however, the book provided clearer definitions of the vocabulary terms listed in the back of each chapter. For many of the terms, a clear definition is provided neither in the context of the book where the word appears or in a glossary. Amazon's X-ray feature sounds like a good idea, but unfortunately, the key terms it chooses to define are not the words highlighted by the authors of this book. It falls seriously short. I give this two stars because I feel I am learning successfully from the book. For the most part, the Kindle format is just getting in the way.

A Kindle book that isn't compatible with the Kindle
By Amazon Customer
It says the book is the "Kindle Edition" but it isn't actually available for Kindle. If you have a Kindle and plan to read this book on it, you're out of luck. It's "incompatible" according to Amazon customer service. This is supposedly the decision of the author or the publisher. A Kindle book that is not compatible with a Kindle. Makes a lot of sense to me!

The Men from the Boys, by William J. Mann

Jeff O’Brien - bright, good-looking, and inching dangerously past thirty, is caught between two generations, the Baby Boomers and Generation X. He’s been with his partner, Lloyd, for seven years now, but when Lloyd announces that there’s no passion left between them, Jeff is sent into something of an existential frenzy. Desperate not to end up alone, Jeff haunts the dance floor and roadside rest stops, finding both the sordid and the sublime in anonymous encounters. But it’s love he’s after, so ultimately it’s his bittersweet romance in Provincetown with Eduardo, twenty-two and a vision of gorgeous, wide-eyed youth, that lingers in his mind and seems to hold the answers he seeks. This is a story of a man coming to terms with the accelerating ambiguity of his world, where men die young but old age is actively devalued. It is the story of gay life today, the life being led by thousands of men trying desperately to keep up, and to discover if anything really unites gay men other than desire. It is the story of how the truths of gay life are handed down from gay generation to gay generation. It is the story of what separates the men from the boys.

Amazon.com Review
Over the past seven years Bill Mann has established himself as one of the most intelligent, prolific, and witty journalists writing for the gay and lesbian press. Now, in his first novel, The Men From the Boys, Mann turns his attention to delineating the process by which boys become men and men become gay. Set in Massachusetts, Mann's characters enter and leave relationships, find mentors, sleep with cute boys, deal with AIDS, face death, and generally learn what it means to be responsible, caring, sexually active adults in a culture that does its best to inhibit all three. The Men From the Boys is a debut novel that delights and challenges, but more importantly, understands how we live today.

From Library Journal
Jeff O'Brien is at several major crossroads on life's highway. First, Lloyd, his lover of six years, announces that the passion is gone from their relationship. Second, Jeff's first lover, Javis, is slowly succumbing to AIDS. Third, at 33, Jeff is no longer part of the hip, young crowd of gay men and lesbians who party in Provincetown each summer. Finally, Jeff's father dies, his childhood pet is killed, his current pet has a stroke (but lives), and his hair is beginning to thin. All in all, Jeff is not having a good year. Though lumping all of the above into the same category of crisis makes Jeff sound shallow, he isn't. He's human and having trouble, like the rest of us, with the issues of change and aging. This remarkable book by first novelist Mann discusses the concepts of family, love, passion, and acceptance in ways few books have. If you only buy one gay novel this year, make it this one.?Theodore R. Salvadori, Margaret E. Heggan Free P.L., Hurffville, N.J.
Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Jeff and Lloyd, lovers for seven years, and Javitz, Jeff's former lover, who is sick with AIDS, enjoy a friendship so close that it is more like a family relationship, with undercurrents and depths that will resonate with many readers of this first novel that distinguishes its author as one of gay fiction's most promising writers. The book spans one year, presents some moving remembrances of earlier times, focuses primarily on Jeff's life, and unfolds in scenes that alternate between Boston and Provincetown. Mann eloquently tells a story full of mature, out, gay professionals who have shaped their own lives and, in many cases, created their own families, which may or may not be unique: Jeff has summer relationships in Provincetown with younger men yet truly loves Lloyd, with whom he sleeps in "the breathing position," which for Jeff represents home and hearth. As Javitz notes, "It's not easy navigating uncharted waters." Mann's novel portrays lives navigated so well that it is a strong candidate for next year's gay fiction awards and sure to be in high demand. Charles Harmon

Not My Favorite Gay Themed Novel, But.....
By B. Morse
At a time in my life when I was thirsty for gay culture, gay films, and especially gay novels, I encountered The Men From the Boys.
While not my favorite gay-themed novel, it is one of the better ones that I have read.... . It is hard to find an average, every day gay novel to read at times, about an average, everyday gay man in average, everyday circumstances.
But while yearning for just such a find, in reading this novel, I found so many extraordinary features to gay life that perhaps had never dawned upon me before. Jeff, the central character of the novel, is in his thirties, as I am now. And, true to the description the author applies to this time of life for gay men, he is 'gay middle-aged.' It struck me as horribly realistic that the author would describe the character as such, middle-aged, amidst a youth-obsessed culture. But, like it or not, it is the truth. And William Mann, the novelist, captures this in the pages of this book.
The story centers on the past and present relationship of Jeff and Lloyd, his lover of several years, as well as Javitz, a former lover, stricken with AIDS. While at times I felt as though Javitz was thrown in as 'comic relief' to the severity of the novel in the disintegration of Jeff and Lloyd's relationship, feeling that there is no longer any passion left, Javitz is utterly recognizable in gay culture and society. Every city has a Javitz, the jaded, bitter, but unwaveringly, hysterically funny friend. Javitz's AIDS affliction is not a major plot point, but very poingantly portrayed in the novel.
This book is about so many different things, it is hard to list them all. The obsession of gay men with youth and beauty, the horrors of AIDS, the fickle nature of gay relationships, and the lack of determination to work out problems when they arise, the bitter, vengeful nature of many gay men, and the occasional loneliness of gay life, just like any other lifestyle. Although not the best gay novel I have ever read, this is one of my favorites.

Doesn't Rise Above Cliches
By Joseph J. Schultz
After reading (mostly) glowing reviews, I decided to give this book a try, despite the tired subject matter cited in the cover blurb. The fluid writing kept me expecting more than the book actually delivered. Gay ghettos, open relationships, youth-obsessed culture... Anyone who's ever picked up a single issue of Genre or Out knows enough about these subjects to have written this novel. The language and the structure are stong, but not strong enough to carry the thin plot, wherein the protagonist mostly laments the fact that he can't have a deeply satisfying relationship with every beautiful man he meets. Supporting characters, most of whom spend time finding and discussing what "paths" they should follow, don't do any more growing than the main character.
This lack of character growth was my main problem with the novel. The characters rehash every conversation that has been part of the urban gay forum for the last ten years, but only from the perspective of people who are in the urban gay life. That the (exclusively sex-driven) culture of the novel is the only possible culture is taken for granted by all characters, thereby removing any real tension between opposing viewpoints. When an open relationship between the protagonist and his primary partner begins to lack "passion" for the partner, the question of whether opening the relationship is part of its downfall is never seriously considered. Similary, the problem of youth-obsession is solved through anonymous sexual encounters at roadside rest stops, where the protagonist is still made to feel young. Less "sophisticated" - but equally valid - views such as monogamy never provide a contrast for the characters to make compelling arguments for their current, unfulfilling lifestyles.
One minor character, introduced near the end as a sort of "voce ex machina," has had what he feels is a full life and beautiful relationship, but is introduced so artificially, and briefly, that it doesn't have much impact beyond distraction. And in the end, distraction - from one man to the next, from one self-imposed dramatic episode to the next, is all these characters seem to desire or achieve. They don't need to find all the answers, but the story itself should ask more questions.
The writing is promising enough that I wouldn't hesitate to pick up another book by Mann, if the novel had more perspective than the characters.

This book gets popped to the top shelf
By James
The only gay novel I have yet read that even compares to "Men From the Boys" is Forman Brown's "A Better Angel" (written & published originally in 1933). Nothing compares to Wm. Mann's searching novel. I have rarely read anything better, and I have never read anything sadder. Yes, the character is self-absorbed, but his own blindness makes him that much more interesting to watch as he develops in maturity and even wisdom.
In "Creed for the Third Millenium", when Colleen McCullough's character is told to 'write a book', I almost threw down the novel in disgust. Writing a book will NEVER save the world. When Wm. Mann's character struggles to write his book, it's his attempt to save his soul, the perfect forum for this kind of venture. The book is full of moments like this one, as each character in turn struggles to find his way through his life and its challenges.
Structurally, this novel was phenomenal. The way the back-and-forth of time and space spins around left me SPINNING. Masterfully done, a great story with lively characters, this is one book I'm glad I had passed on to me, and I recommend this to anyone interested in man's struggle to find his own soul.
