In this important new book, the authors argue that primate-specific parts of the prefrontal cortex evolved to reduce errors in foraging choices, so that particular ancestors of modern humans could overcome periodic food shortages. These developments laid the foundation for working out problems in our imagination, which resulted in the insights that allow humans to avoid errors entirely, at least at times.

In the book, the authors detail which parts of the prefrontal cortex evolved exclusively in primates, how its connections explain why the prefrontal cortex alone can perform its function, and why other parts of the brain cannot do what the prefrontal cortex does. Based on an analysis of its evolutionary history, the book uses evidence from lesion, imaging, and cell-recording experiments to argue that the primate prefrontal cortex generates goals from a current behavioural context and that it can do so on the basis of single events. As a result, the prefrontal cortex uses the attentive control of behaviour to augment an older general-purpose learning system, one that evolved very early in the history of animals. This older system learns slowly and cumulatively over many experiences based on reinforcement. The authors argue that a new learning system evolved in primates at a particular time and place in their history, that it did so to decrease the errors inherent in the older learning system, and that severe volatility of food resources provided the driving force for these developments.

Richard Passingham did his undergraduate degree at Oxford University (BA, 1966), and then did a Masters degree in Clinical Psychology.at the Institute of Psychiatry in London (M.Sc. 1967). Hthen undertook his Ph.D. at the University of London (1971). Afterwards he returned to Oxford University as a Research Officer on a MRC Programme Grant. He was made a University Lecturer in the Department of Experimental Psychology in 1976 and a Fellow of Wadham College in the same year. He was made an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the MRC Cyclotron Unit at the Hammersmith Hospital in 1991 and an Honorary Principal at the Wellcome Centre for Neuroimaging in London in 1996. In 1993 he became an ad hominem Reader in Cognitive Neuroscience at Oxford University and became a Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience in 1997. Richard was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2009 and Fellow of the American Psychological Society in 2010.

Steven P. Wise received a B.A. in biology from Dartmouth College and a Ph.D. in biology from Washington University in St. Louis. After a brief period of postdoctoral study, he had a 30-year career as a neurophysiologist at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr Wise served as the Chief of the Laboratory of Neurophysiology at the National Institute of Mental Health and Chief of the Section on Neurophysiology of the Laboratory of Systems Neuroscience.

Excellent summary cast as a theory

This is the author's summary of research on the prefrontal cortex, cast in the form of an integrated, evolutionary-neuroscience theory of the functional neuroanatomy of the prefrontal cortex. If you do not understand neuroanatomy and are new to this area, this book will probably be over your head. However, if you have some knowledge of neuroanatomy, you will probably find this book an excellent integration of several decades of research. There are several plusses that come from the author's theory: 1) It serves as a mnemonic device, increasing the reader's ability to retain and integrate masses of theory; 2) it serves as a framework for future research; 3) It can function as an explanatory model for understanding current behavior. Very much worth the price.

This is an excellent book. It is the authoritative work on the structure and function of human prefrontal cortex, presented within its evolutionary context. It is dense with information and references and well written. The authors are world-reknown scientists and experts who don't just list facts but instead present their own integrated conceptual framework for thinking about the role of the prefrontal cortex in human thought, action, and emotion.

Endocrine "Secrets"

Overall this is a useful book to provide a rapid overview about practical aspects of general endocrinology. It is a great starting point for internal medicine residents and fellows. "Secrets" may not be the right word: it is a good overview of essential practical knowledge about pathophysiology, diagnostic approaches and therapeutic modalities.
The chapters are somewhat uneven in terms of depth: some are quite detailed (e.g. diabetes in pregnancy), others would warrant slightly more detail and updating (as well as elimination of mostly minor errors that could probably be easily be eliminated by a reading by peers).
While this has nothing to do with the content, one very weak point is the size of the print, which is way too small! Many will need a magnifying glass to read the text. The publisher would be well advised to fix this - otherwise it is not worth buying future versions of this book or other "secrets".

I chose this rating because it's a very practical book and updated. It has very concise summaries of the different endocrine pathologies , it is very easy to read with the main questions we want to be answered. It is not a book to go deeper into a subject but that is not the objective of the book. I really recomend it.

Though this is the fifth book in a five-book re-release from Silhouette Books. I thoroughly enjoyed books 1 through 4 and I can tell you that King's Ransom is a fitting end to this special re-release!
DON'T miss this golden opportunity to put your hands on a winner! I've always been a fan of stories featuring rough and rugged ranchers and King McCandless fits the bill! When King's love interest, young and innocent Jesse LeBeau is ruthlessly attacked in her home in St. Louis one night, King gets the news and comes to the rescue in all his glory (and he's even got a white horse!). King brings Jesse home where she can mend her tortured spirit surrounded by friends and family who will keep her safe....or will they? It's fairly easy to figure out whose the bad guy half-way through the story, but this by no means takes away a minute of your reading pleasure. There are plenty of twists and turns and questions to be answered by the end of the book. After reading this book, who wouldn't wish they had their very own "King"?
